Socrates Economou joined Trafigura’s metals and minerals division in 2007 after graduating, working in Africa and China before moving to Geneva. He was appointed Head of Nickel and Cobalt Trading in 2016, developing the trading books as demand for these metals has grown as a result of electrification and renewable energy technologies.
Socrates started his career in Johannesburg developing the company’s copper and cobalt business predominantly out of the DRC and then overlooking the Group’s trading activity in Sub Saharan Africa. Following this Socrates held several leadership positions, including Head of Refined Metals for China. During his time, he led the development of the domestic refined metals business, substantially increasing the footprint of Trafigura’s trading activity in China.
A Cyprus national, Socrates holds a Bachelors in Political Studies and International Relations and a Masters in Shipping, Trade and Finance from Cass Business School.
